... Farallon mermaids: A group of six women became the first all-female team to swim from San Francisco to the Farallon Islands on June 4 - a 30-mile trip that took them 16 1/2 hours.
If this sounds familiar, you might remember that a group of five men and one woman swam the same route just a few weeks earlier.
Congrats to all of the swimmers who braved 53-degree waters, 20-foot waves, 20-knot winds ... and big whales. At one point during the women's swim, a whale came within 50 yards.
Special congrats to Kim Chambers, who did the swim twice.
